What is the Navy body fat formula?

The U.S. Navy body composition assessment (BCA) uses circumference measurements and logarithmic equations to estimate body fat percentage. It was developed from regression analysis against hydrostatic weighing and remains widely used in military fitness testing and consumer fitness calculators.

Unlike BMI, the Navy method incorporates body shape through waist and neck circumferences, making it more responsive to changes in abdominal fat for many individuals.

Measurements required

  • Height — standing, without shoes, to the nearest 0.5 inch or centimeter.
  • Neck — just below the larynx, tape sloping slightly downward to the front.
  • Waist (men) — at the navel (umbilicus), horizontal, at minimal circumference after normal exhale.
  • Waist (women) — at the narrowest point, or at the navel if no clear narrowing.
  • Hip (women only) — at the widest protrusion of the buttocks.

Consistent tape placement matters more than calculator precision. A 1 cm waist error can shift results by 1–2 percentage points.

The equations

All measurements below are in inches. Results are body fat percentage.

Men:

BF% = 86.010 × log₁₀(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76

Women:

BF% = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log₁₀(height) − 78.387

These are the DoD-standard logarithmic formulas. Some online calculators use slightly different coefficient sets from earlier military publications.

Worked example (men)

A man who is 70 inches tall (178 cm) with a 15-inch neck and 34-inch waist:

  1. waist − neck = 34 − 15 = 19
  2. log₁₀(19) ≈ 1.279; log₁₀(70) ≈ 1.845
  3. BF% = 86.010 × 1.279 − 70.041 × 1.845 + 36.76 ≈ 18.5%
