Lean body mass explained

Lean body mass tells you how much of your weight is not fat—critical for tracking recomposition, setting protein targets, and understanding what the scale cannot show.

Definition

Lean body mass (LBM) equals total body weight minus fat mass. If you weigh 75 kg with 20% body fat, your fat mass is 15 kg and your lean body mass is 60 kg. LBM encompasses skeletal muscle, bone, organs, connective tissue, and body water.

Fat-free mass (FFM) is closely related and sometimes used interchangeably, though FFM technically includes essential fat in bone marrow and organs while LBM may not in some research definitions. For practical fitness tracking, treat them as equivalent.

The basic formula

LBM (kg) = weight (kg) × (1 − BF% / 100)

Fat mass (kg) = weight (kg) × (BF% / 100)

Example: 70 kg person at 25% body fat → LBM = 70 × 0.75 = 52.5 kg; fat mass = 17.5 kg.

Alternative formulas (without body fat %)

When body fat percentage is unknown, research formulas estimate LBM from height, weight, and sex:

Boer formula (1984)

Men: LBM = 0.407 × weight(kg) + 0.267 × height(cm) − 19.2

Women: LBM = 0.252 × weight(kg) + 0.473 × height(cm) − 48.3

James formula (1976)

Men: LBM = 1.1 × weight(kg) − 128 × (weight(kg)/height(cm))²

Women: LBM = 1.07 × weight(kg) − 148 × (weight(kg)/height(cm))²

These population-level estimates have ±2–3 kg error for individuals. Prefer LBM calculated from a measured body fat percentage when available.

Why lean body mass matters

  • Recomposition tracking: flat scale weight with rising LBM means you are losing fat and gaining muscle.
  • Protein targets: many sports nutrition guidelines reference lean mass or total weight for protein intake (typically 1.2–2.0 g/kg depending on activity).
  • Metabolic context: higher LBM generally supports higher resting energy expenditure.
  • Fat loss planning: knowing LBM helps set realistic end-weight targets.

Tracking LBM over time

  1. Get a body fat estimate using the same method each check-in.
  2. Weigh yourself on the same scale, same time of day.
  3. Calculate LBM with the formula above.
  4. Compare monthly trends—not daily swings.
  5. Pair with strength benchmarks (squat, deadlift, pull-ups) for validation.

LBM vs muscle mass

Skeletal muscle typically represents 40–55% of LBM in healthy adults, with the remainder being bone, organs, and water. A DEXA scan can separate muscle from other lean components; consumer methods cannot. Do not treat LBM as a direct muscle measurement—it is a useful proxy for trends.
