Scale weight tells you almost nothing about body composition. Lean body mass (LBM) fills that gap—it quantifies everything that is not stored fat.
Definition
Lean body mass = total weight − fat mass
If you weigh 75 kg with 20% body fat:
- Fat mass = 75 × 0.20 = 15 kg
- LBM = 75 − 15 = 60 kg
LBM includes skeletal muscle, bone, organs, connective tissue, and body water. It is closely related to fat-free mass (FFM), though research definitions differ slightly.
The basic formula
LBM (kg) = weight (kg) × (1 − BF% / 100)
You need a body fat estimate first. Options:
- AI photo calculator
- Navy tape formula
- Methods in our measurement guide
Alternative formulas (without body fat %)
When BF% is unknown, population equations estimate LBM from height, weight, and sex:
Boer (1984):
- Men: LBM = 0.407 × weight(kg) + 0.267 × height(cm) − 19.2
- Women: LBM = 0.252 × weight(kg) + 0.473 × height(cm) − 48.3
James (1976):
- Men: LBM = 1.1 × weight(kg) − 128 × (weight/height)²
- Women: LBM = 1.07 × weight(kg) − 148 × (weight/height)²
These have ±2–3 kg individual error. Prefer LBM calculated from a measured body fat percentage when available.

Why LBM matters
Recomposition tracking: Flat scale weight with rising LBM = fat loss + muscle gain simultaneously.
Protein targets: Sports nutrition guidelines often reference 1.6–2.2 g/kg based on total or lean mass during cuts.
Metabolic context: Higher LBM generally supports higher resting energy expenditure.
Fat loss planning: Knowing LBM helps set realistic end-weight targets instead of arbitrary scale numbers.
LBM vs muscle mass
Skeletal muscle is typically 40–55% of LBM. The rest is bone, organs, and water. Consumer methods cannot separate muscle from other lean components—treat LBM as a useful trend proxy, not a direct muscle measurement.
DEXA can approximate muscle mass separately; it is the most accessible clinical option for that level of detail.
Tracking LBM over time
- Same body fat method, same conditions, monthly
- Same scale, same time of day
- Calculate LBM with the formula
- Compare trends—not daily swings
- Validate with strength benchmarks
During fat loss, aim to preserve LBM through resistance training and adequate protein. Strategies in how to reduce body fat.
The bottom line
Lean body mass turns a body fat percentage and scale weight into actionable composition data. Track it monthly during cuts to ensure you are losing fat—not muscle.
